About Play233

A mobile game studio from Ghana, on a mission to fill the gap in African gaming — with games that are culturally rooted and globally relevant.

"The global games industry has produced thousands of titles. Almost none of them were built for Africa — by Africans, in African languages, rooted in African culture. We are changing that."
Our Story

Built to fill a gap.

Play233 was founded with a clear purpose: the African gaming market is growing rapidly, but the content available to African players has always been built somewhere else, by someone else, for someone else.

We set out to change that. Not by translating or reskinning what already exists — but by building original games from scratch, rooted in the languages, stories, and cultural identity of the African continent.

Our first title, JollofWords, is proof that African-first content can be both deeply local and broadly appealing. Our pipeline — Door of Return and Mercury Gods — takes that ambition further.

We are a small team working in Accra, building for a billion-person audience.

🎯

Local content, global ambition

We build games that are authentically African and designed to travel — not games that compromise cultural depth for international appeal.

🌱

Built by local teams

Our development, creative, and cultural research happens on the ground in Ghana. The talent is here. We build with it.

📱

Mobile-first by design

Africa is a mobile-first continent. Every title we produce is built for smartphone — optimised for the devices and networks our audience actually uses.

Culturally responsible

We treat African languages, symbols, and heritage with care and accuracy. Culture is not a costume — it is the foundation of everything we build.

Where We're Going

A pan-African game studio.

JollofWords is live in Ghana and Nigeria. Our roadmap takes us to Senegal, Kenya, South Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora communities of Europe and North America.

We are not building niche products. We are building the infrastructure for African gaming IP — franchises, characters, and stories that belong to this continent and resonate far beyond it.
